Our design process is highly collaborative. Working closely with our clients, we concentrate on the publication’s content and context along with its larger goals. Our method is informed by our experience but not confined by it—we value flexibility.
Intelligence, sensitivity, and an inspired functionality characterize our design work. We balance our belief in rigor and form with vision and innovation.
Lucia | Marquand works with authors, curators, artists, and others to manage manuscripts from beginning to end. Our long experience with museum publications gives us a broad art historical background, which informs and sharpens our editorial work.
We assess the manuscript, connect the project with an appropriate editor, and coordinate text proofing. Our typesetters are all trained editors and approach the typesetting work with meticulous care and a typographic sensitivity.
Skill, precision, and experience are essential qualities in the production of fine art publications. Careful and exacting pre-press and printing are critical components in our bookmaking process. Working closely with the designer, we ensure the materials and printing techniques are tailored for the project.
Color management for our books is provided through our pre-press partner iocolor. Image adjustment and review is handled with scrupulous care. We partner with a select few premium printers who we have worked with for many years and who understand the demanding standards of art publishing.
Lucia | Marquand connects books with appropriate publishers on behalf of our clients. We have a strong relationship with every major art publisher, both academic and trade.
Established in 2007, our studio in Tieton, Washington, combines nineteenth-, twentieth-, and twenty-first-century technologies to further the art of the book. We produce limited-edition volumes, artist’s books, handmade cases, and unusual small-run publications for artists and publishers.
Anchored by the traditions of letterpress printing and artisan binding and case-making, the Tieton studio augments the craft of the handmade book with laser cutting, plotter cutting, and digital and screen printing to create thoroughly modern objects.
Our warehouse in Tieton handles basic book storage and fulfillment services.
